Socratea exorrhiza, the walking palm or cashapona, is a palm native to rainforests in tropical Central and South America. It can grow to 25 metres in height, with a stem diameter of up to 16 cm, [1] but is more typically 15–20 m tall and 12 cm in diameter. [2] It has unusual stilt roots, the function of which has been debated.
Their growth form can be climbers, shrubs, tree-like and stemless plants, all commonly known as palms. Those having a tree-like form are colloquially called palm trees. [4] Currently, 181 genera with around 2,600 species are known, [5] [6] most of which are restricted to tropical and subtropical climates.
Trachycarpus geminisectus, T. princeps and T. oreophilus are still too rare and small in cultivation to assess their full potential. Two additional species have been described recently: Trachycarpus ukhrulensis from Manipur [ 6 ] and T. ravenii from Laos ; [ 7 ] the former is known from cultivation as Trachycarpus sp. "Manipur" or Trachycarpus ...
Butia odorata, also known as the South American jelly palm, [3] jelly palm, [3] [4] or pindo palm, [3] is a Butia palm native to southernmost Brazil and Uruguay. [2] This slow-growing palm grows up to 10m, although it is often less tall. It is identifiable by its feather palm pinnate leaves that arch inwards towards a thick stout trunk.
Washingtonia robusta, known by common name as the Mexican fan palm, Mexican washingtonia, or skyduster is a palm tree native to the Baja California peninsula and a small part of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. Despite its limited native distribution, W. robusta one of the most widely cultivated subtropical palms in the world. [3]
Chamaerops humilis is a shrub-like clumping palm, with several stems growing from a single base. It has an underground rhizome which produces shoots with palmate, sclerophyllous leaves. The stems grow slowly and often tightly together, eventually reaching 2–5 m (10–20 ft) tall with a trunk diameter of 20–25 cm (8–10 in).
It is a very fast growing palm, and can go from 3 to 15 feet (0.9 to 4.6 m) in just 5 years under the right conditions. During late spring the tree will produce small, fragrant flowers. Once fully matured, it can reach heights of up to 70 feet (21 m) in the wild; however, most do not exceed 40 feet (12 m).
The cultivar group Trachycarpus fortunei 'Wagnerianus' is a small-leafed semi-dwarf variant of the species selected in cultivation in China and Japan. It differs in rarely growing to more than 5 m (16 ft) tall, with leaflets less than 45 cm (1 ft 6 in) long; the short stature and small leaves give it greater tolerance of wind exposure. [3]
