Cornerstone Theological Seminary had its beginnings as an evening Bible institute at Wealthy Street Baptist Church in 1941. David Otis Fuller who was elected pastor of Wealthy Street Baptist Church on November 4, 1934; became one of the founders of Cornerstone University and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.

Welch was a pastor and held the degree of PhD. He took over the leadership of Cornerstone University as a small college meeting in a church basement, bought a 64-acre (26 hectares) cornfield, and built it into an accredited 4-year Christian liberal arts college.
WCSG began broadcasting after five years of preparation on June 9, 1973, with an easy listening and fine arts format.
