Mary Jewett Pritchard, 1944. Mary Jewett Pritchard (September 17, 1905 – June 6, 1992) was an American Samoan textile artist. Pritchard is widely credited with reviving the art of siapo, the Samoan version of tapa, handmade cloth created by pounding the bark of plants.
Mrs. Coleman was born in Wilcox county in October 1903, and lived just one mile from the famous Gee’s Bend in the Quilting Bee’s hay day. Minder learned to quilt as a small child, and soon realized she had a knack for the art. The Lutheran churches, as they developed, accepted a limited role for larger works of art in churches, [1] [2] and also encouraged prints and book illustrations. Calvinists remained steadfastly opposed to art in churches, and suspicious of small printed images of religious subjects, though generally fully accepting secular images in their homes.
