Thanks so much for this. I had no idea this method existed and I haven't used IRC in decades. I've been checking books out of my local library and stripping DRM off them with Calibre, but the selection is limited. I found every book I searched for so far in epub format.
Baen books, a fantasy/sci-fi publisher (mostly military sci-fi I think) has a bunch of books for free, and the ebooks they sell are DRM free, if you do decide to purchase anything. Reply reply

And then inevitably get on a tangent of books about a given subject - wade davis' book on Mallory and the great war had me reading wwi books for a few months... Or go wander around a library and look at their 'new' stuff. Read Parademic 1918 as a result, which was equally fascinating and disturbing.
But more importantly they probably give you access to Overdrive/Libby/Hoopla. These apps allow you to check out audiobooks for free on your mobile device using your library account. There are repositories of free audiobooks online but my suggestion would be to go the library route so you can try out audiobooks with some newer titles.

239 votes, 25 comments. true. Yes and no. The limitation/catch is that you only have four races and classes, rather than the complete 9 races (and subraces) and 13 classes (and archetypes) the phb, the the rules available are enough to cover most basic play and corner cases.
On another note, Amazon has a LOT of classic books for free, so if you have any Kindle, it's definitely worth looking through. Since I'm mostly interested in classics, it's worked out very well for me. EDIT: nevermind, I figured it out. Welp, can't say I really like this website's layout, but I appreciate the resource.
