Merpati Airlines Fokker 100 at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport, Pekanbaru in 2008 The former Indonesian airline Merpati Nusantara Airlines offered flights to many domestic destinations and to Timor Leste , Australia, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.
On 14 May 1966 (), the airline officially became the national airline of Malaysia and Singapore, jointly operated by both countries. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] The company was re-christened again on 1 January 1967 ( 1967-01-01 ) , [ 11 ] this time to Malaysia–Singapore Airlines (MSA). [ 12 ]
The aircraft involved in the crash was a Fokker F28 Fellowship 3000 registered as PK-GFU with a serial number of 11131. The aircraft had its first flight in April 1978. It was delivered the same year and after service with Garuda Indonesia it was sold to Merpati Nusantara Airlines in 1989. [5]
The aircraft involved in the crash was a Fokker F27 Friendship 600 built in 1969 with a serial number of 10415, delivered to Merpati Nusantara Airlines as PK-MHF in 1974. Later, it was sold to Trigana Air Service in 1993 as PK-YPM, Sempati Air in January 1995 and returned to Trigana Air Service in August 1995.
