Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) role is to: Collect national revenue in the form of taxes and customs duties consisting of import duty, export duty, excise duty, sales tax, service tax, extraordinary profit levy, vehicle levy, departure levy, non-tax revenue, state revenue/trust money and tourism tax.
Malaysia issued its first general duty revenue stamps in 1975, inscribed Hasil Malaysia (Revenue Malaysia) and depicting the country's coat of arms. Three values of $25, $100 and $250 were issued. In 1982, the coat of arms was changed slightly so the set was reissued with the new version. This time $500 and $1000 values were added.
Singapore also issued various entertainments duty stamps to pay the tax on cinema tickets between 1955 and 1965. Singapore left Malaysia in 1965 and continued to issue its own revenue stamps independently until they were withdrawn in 1999.
In 1935, the Malayan Postal Union was created, which included the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malay States. Only postage due stamps were issued with the inscription "Malayan postal union", which were used in the colony and the individual states. Similar postage due stamps were used in Malaysia until 1966 and in Singapore until 1968.

Data on foreigners' movements within Singapore were processed by the new Immigration Data Processing Centre. The Last Port Clearance was introduced in 1980 to attract more passenger liners to Singapore. A passport office was opened at Joo Chiat Complex in 1984. This office issued both international and restricted passports and was closed in 1999.
