A few years later, in 1607, the city of Bern acquired Thierachern and added it into the Thun District. Originally it was part of the parish of Amsoldingen. In 1528 Bern adopted the new faith of the Protestant Reformation and all the parishes in the Canton converted.

The oldest traces of a settlement in the area are several Bronze Age graves around Vorderrainstrasse and Höstettli. During the Middle Ages Wattenwil was owned by the Counts of Neuchâtel-Nidau. Since 2010, it remains therefore a fully recognised district under the law and the Constitution (Art.3 al.2) of the Canton of Bern. The district has an area of 189 km² and consists of 25 municipalities :
