Snapping scapula syndrome, also known as scapulocostal syndrome or scapulothoracic syndrome, is described by a "grating, grinding, popping or snapping sensation of the scapula onto the back side of the ribs or thoracic area of the spine" (Hauser). Side-sleeping may exacerbate pain, especially in the neck or shoulders on the side you sleep on, the experts noted. If you fall asleep on one arm, this can reduce circulation or cause numbness.

Spinal stenosis is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal or neural foramen that results in pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. [6] Symptoms may include pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs. [1]
Symptoms vary from localized warmth and erythema (redness) [1] to joint pain and stiffness, to stinging pain that surrounds the joint around the inflamed bursa. Bursitis could possibly also cause a snapping, grinding or popping sound – known as snapping scapula syndrome – when it occurs in the shoulder joint. This is not necessarily painful.
