The Great Treaty of 1722 was a document signed in Albany, New York by leaders of the Five Nations of Iroquois, Province of New York, Colony of Virginia, and Province of Pennsylvania. Also known as the Treaty of Albany, it was made to create a boundary and keep the peace between English settlers and the Iroquois nations.
Those that returned often got into violent conflict with colonists trying to settle the area. The Iroquois regarded the Western style of war as "irrational" and saw no point in making a "suicidal" attack against Fort Bull that was likely to cause heavy losses. The Iroquois motive for the Beaver Wars was to gain control of trade with the French, Dutch, and English colonies in their region. They defeated the Erie people who lived on the south shore of Lake Erie in the mid-1650s and some of the survivors migrated south to the English colony of Virginia where they were called "Richaherians."
The Iroquois regarded the battle as an unprovoked act of aggression, while the Virginia colonists claimed that the Iroquois had raided Virginia settlements and killed livestock. [3]: 44–47 The battle was one factor that led colonial authorities to negotiate with Native American leaders for the 1744 Treaty of Lancaster.
