Botswana, [c] officially the Republic of Botswana, [d] is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Botswana is topographically flat, with approximately 70 percent of its territory part of the Kalahari Desert. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, Zambia to the north and Zimbabwe to the northeast.
The economy of Botswana is currently one of the world's fastest growing economies, [19] averaging about 5% per annum over the past decade. [19] Growth in private sector employment averaged about 10% per annum during the first 30 years of the country's independence.
Such reserves may partly be the residues of ancient lakes; the Kalahari Desert was once a much wetter place. The ancient Lake Makgadikgadi dominated the area, covering the Makgadikgadi Pan and surrounding areas, but it drained or dried out some 10,000 years ago. It may have once covered as much as 120,000 square kilometres (46,000 sq mi). [9]
