The Church Street Methodist congregation formed in 1816. Initially, it met in a house on Hill Avenue in downtown Knoxville. In 1836 the congregation moved into a new building on Church Street between Walnut and Market Streets, where it met until 1863 when the building was confiscated by Union troops for use as a hospital during the American Civil War.
At the time of its completion, the sanctuary was Knoxville's largest church auditorium, seating 1,600. [3] The original organ was purchased from the Riviera Theater in 1935. [3] The current organ is an instrument by M.P. Moller of 42 ranks installed in 1958. The congregation is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
The church is named for English Methodist evangelist Francis Asbury, who is credited with disseminating Methodism in the United States in late 18th and early 19th centuries, and who on November 2, 1800, led the first Methodist worship service in East Tennessee. [2] The church sits on land that was donated in 1855 by the Huffaker family.
