Adolphe Sax was born in Dinant, Belgium on November 6th 1814. He first made a name for himself by designing and building several innovative woodwind instruments, such as the saxotromba and saxtuba. He eventually created the saxophone in 1846, which combined aspects of both brass and woodwind instruments to create a powerful but agile new sound.
His idea was to create an instrument that combined the best qualities of a woodwind instrument with the best qualities of a brass instrument, and in the 1840s he conceived the saxophone. This invention was patented in Paris in 1846.
The journey of the saxophone began when Belgian inventor Adolphe Sax set up a small workshop at Rue Saint-Georges in Paris, France in July of 1843. Sax was already renowned for his accomplishments innovating on existing instruments – particularly the bass clarinet – and for his experiments creating the saxhorn and saxotromba.
Perceived as the missing link between string, brass and woodwind instruments, the saxophone was born in the 1840’s. Adolphe Sax patented a range of eight saxophones in 1846 and in doing so introduced a unique instrument for use in both orchestras and concert bands.
