The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum was founded in 1978, with approval from the city of Ann Arbor, as a touring collection of exhibits built by local specialists and volunteers. The museum opened at its permanent location in 1982 in the city's historic brick firehouse with 25 exhibits on two floors, one staff person, and ten volunteers. [3]

The former Alexander G. Ruthven Museums Building on Central Campus, looking towards the northeast. The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, formerly known as the Exhibit Museum of Natural History, began in the mid-19th century and expanded greatly with the donation of 60,000 specimens by Joseph Beal Steere, a U-M alumnus, in the 1870s.

In May 2022, the museum opened another new area within Over the Air, this time in collaboration with the Marquette Board of Light and Power and the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. The Pedal Power exhibit features a light board powered by two pedal bikes, providing children with the opportunity to understand electricity via experiential learning. [6]
