Spiegel was an American direct marketing retailer founded in 1865 by Joseph Spiegel.Spiegel published a catalog, like its competitors Sears, Aldens, and Montgomery Ward, which advertised various brands of apparel, accessories, and footwear, as well as housewares, toys, tools, firearms, and electronics.
Limited Brands, in 1980, opened the first Express store, [6] as women's clothier "Limited Express" in Chicago's Water Tower Place. [7] Former CEO Michael Weiss joined the brand in 1981 when the test expanded to include eight stores. By 1986, Express had 250 stores and began testing the sale of men's merchandise in 16 stores the following year.
Aldens was founded by Benjamin J. Rosenthal [1] in 1889 in Chicago under the name Chicago Mail Order and Millinery Company and was incorporated on December 15, 1902. [2] The company primarily sold fashion apparel and accessories for women and men via its catalog. [2] In 1906, the name was changed to Chicago Mail Order Company. [2]
The firm continued as a leading manufacturer of men's clothing until 1982, when it was purchased by Hart Schaffner & Marx (later known as Hartmarx), a Chicago-based apparel-maker and wholesaler. By the mid-1990s, after the headquarters moved to Atlanta , sales were lagging, many of its stores were closing, and it entered into bankruptcy.

Principally a men's clothier, by the mid-1950s some stores also carried women's clothing and later became known as "family apparel centers." In 1956, the chain operated nearly 100 outlets from coast to coast in principal cities, in addition to more than 50 agency stores that sold goods in smaller communities. [ 6 ]
