About four hundred and eighty (480) candidates are accepted into the First-Year level of the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program yearly. A percentage of slots is reserved for UST graduates. Foreign students comprise about 5% to 7% of the total first-year population. Among this number, approximately 80% are graduates of UST.
As of 2013 UST had a total enrollment of approximately 45,000 students, 33,000 undergraduates and 5,000 students in medicine, Law, and the Graduate School. The university admits about 8,500 new students out of 50,000 applicants per year.
UST was allowed to grant a licentiate degree in medicine. From 1877 to 1901, 329 students were granted the licentiate degree. José Rizal studied medicine at the university from 1878 to 1882, where he was granted the rare privilege of studying simultaneously the preparatory course of medicine and the first year of medicine. The first graduates of the two-year course received their diplomas on 28 March 1980. [2] With fifty-eight enrollees in school year 1978 to 1979, the SITF has grown to an enrollment of ninety-three students from twelve different Religious Congregations and Institutes for school year 1981–1982.
In 1959, the preparatory course for medical school was extended to three years, in compliance with the requirements of the Medical Act. In 1964, the College of Liberal Arts was reorganized. The A.B. program was ceded to the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters. The B.S. programs remained in the college, which became the College of Science.
Historically, the colleges are named as Faculty, College, Institute, School, or Conservatory. There are 19 colleges that offer civil courses and 3 faculties that also offer ecclesiastical programs. The Faculties of Ecclesiastical Studies, though governed by its particular statutes, is still an integral part of the university. [1]

In 1971, the Faculty started offering Bachelor of Arts degree programs in Asian Studies, Behavioral Science (originally Liberal Arts-Commerce), Communication Arts, Economics, Journalism, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Translation.
