The hotel and restaurant operator Marriott Corporation completed Marriott's Great America on the site of what had been a pear orchard [4] and opened it to the public on March 20, 1976. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] Admission was US$7.95 (equivalent to $43 in 2023) for adults (12 and up) and US$6.95 (equivalent to $37 in 2023) for children (4–11).
In 1957, the firm expanded into the hotel industry by opening the first Marriott hotel, the Marriott Motor Hotel, in Arlington County, Virginia. In 1964, Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed Marriott-Hot Shoppes, Inc. [7] The company became Marriott Corporation in 1967. In 1967, Marriott acquired the Big Boy family restaurants chain from Bob Wian. The Ameri-Go-Round was the name given to two carousels, one at each of Marriot's Great America amusement parks, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois and California's Great America in Santa Clara, California. Marriott's Great America parks were unusual at the time because they were among the few parks with two carousels within the park.
Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed the Marriott Corporation in 1967. [16] In 1972, the Marriott lodging division acquired the Greek-based Sun Line cruise line, [17] which it owned until 1987. [18] In 1976, the company opened two theme parks, each named Marriott's Great America, in California and Illinois. [19]
Admission was $0.90 for adults, $0.45 for children (older than 12), and free (for children under 12). [3] The initial public mascot of the park was an unnamed "Deputy Marshal" who greeted guests and saved them from dangerous outlaws in daily mock shootouts staged on the hour, every hour, at the park's Main Street.
