Yamcha (ヤムチャ, Yamucha), known as Zedaki in the Harmony Gold dub, is introduced as a desert bandit alongside his companion Puar, trying to steal Goku and Bulma's Dragon Balls. He becomes nervous when near women. [ch. 8, 9] He eventually becomes Goku's ally, starts a relationship with Bulma, and later becomes a pupil of Master Roshi.
Thinking Bulma is a monster, Goku prepares to attack her, but Bulma convinces him that she is a human. After learning that Bulma is a girl, Goku tells her that his grandpa gave him a Dragon Ball before he died. Pasta and Bongo arrive at Goku's home and steal his Dragon Ball, leaving a gold coin in its place.
Bulma takes Goku into her capsule house, where he is astonished by modern technology and female anatomy. Already having three Dragon Balls together, Goku and Bulma start traveling, and soon they meet an old man called Kame-Sen'nin who gives them the fourth Dragon Ball and Kinto'un, a cloud which Goku can fly on, as gifts for returning his turtle.

Goku asks Trunks about the training, but Vegeta doesn't want him to say anything about it. Meanwhile, 18 questions 16 on his love for nature and asks if he even cares that Cell might absorb her and kill him. Bulma lands at Kami's lookout. She gives Gohan, Goku, Trunks, and Vegeta a set of Saiyan armours.
The exhausted Goku, Krillin, and Gohan won their battle, and Bulma, Chi-Chi, and the others arrive to help their friends. Learning of the death of Yamcha, Chiaotzu, Tien, Piccolo, and Kami, the Z Fighters are upset because without the Dragon Balls the others can't be wished back to life again, but luckily Krillin has an idea.
A little later, Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Puar — who are on summer vacation — also meet Roshi and ask where Goku is. Roshi says that he and Krillin have gone far to the Devil's Hand (pretending it as an amusement park or a tourist attraction), so the gang fly in Bulma's Capsule jet to the castle.
