In 1912 the wealthy Birling family live in the industrial town of Brumley in the North Midlands. The Birlings are celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft, the son of a factory owner who is even more successful than the Birlings. Also at the dinner party is the Birlings' son Eric (whose alcoholism the family ignores).
Eric Birling is the son of Arthur and Sybil Birling and the younger brother of Sheila. Eric is presented as a "Jack the Lad" character with a drinking habit, who forced himself on Eva and made her pregnant. He is distanced from the rest of the family and feels he cannot talk to them about his problems.
It starred Bernard Hepton as Inspector Goole, with the younger Birlings played by Sarah Berger, and David Sibley as Eric.
