OFM covers four provinces – the Free State, the North West province, Gauteng and the Northern Cape. In 2005, it commenced broadcasts into the Vaal Triangle area. It broadcasts in English and Afrikaans, in an adult contemporary format. OFM runs a full news service, broadcasting up to 14 news bulletins daily.
The station first went on the air on 1 September 1964, [1] as the first SABC regional FM service, Radio Highveld. At that time the station broadcast hourly news bulletins and easy listening music. In September 1996 the SABC sold Radio Highveld to private enterprise.
After a short period as a sports station (TeamTalk), the frequencies reverted to sole RTÉ control and were used as an additional frequency for RTÉ Radio 1 until transmissions ceased in April 2023, with running costs cited as the reason.
