The aircraft was designed to comply with the EC 216/2008 Annex 2 (j) rules for deregulated class under 70 kg (154 lb) empty weight. It features a joined wing box wing, a single-seat open cockpit without a windshield, a hull for water operations, but no wheeled landing gear and a single electric engine in tractor configuration mounted above the cockpit.
The e-Genius follows a line of airplanes with alternative propulsion systems, which have been developed at the Institute of Aircraft Design under the leadership of Professor Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann: the solar-motor glider Icaré II (1996) and the predecessor of the e-Genius, the motor glider with a fuel cell propulsion system – Hydrogenius (2006).
The aircraft is made from composite material, predominantly carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Its 38 ft (11.6 m) span wing has an area of 120 sq ft (11 m 2) and mounts flaps. The standard engine used is a 105 kW (141 hp) electric powerplant. The aircraft will have ten batteries giving it a four-hour endurance.
