This model also shares relations to the Jinbei Granse and Toyota Granvia. The exterior is styled similarly to the Hiace XH10 and XH20 pre-facelift models and is available in both low roof and high roof. The standard engine is a 2 litre four cylinder paired to a 6 speed manual transmission as standard and is available as a 7-seater or 9-seater van.
The Transporter is the commercial workhorse in the T5 range, available in over 100 combinations. Variants include short- (SWB), or long-wheelbases (LWB); along with low-, medium-, or high-rooflines; and can be configured as a van, minibus, single-cab, double-cab, drop side or chassis truck.
The 1.8 was also available in the long wheelbase, high roof, panel van version. From May 1983, the L300 Express received rectangular headlights in chrome surrounds as part of the SC iteration. [13] The SC also featured newly designed black resin bumpers and adjustments to the front suspension spring rate to improve ride and handling. [21]
The 4.7-metre (15.4 ft) long Econovan Maxi van was also high roofed, but steel-sided only. [13] Powertrain and rear wheel setups were the same as the 4.4-metre Maxi. [ 13 ] In 1986, four-wheel drive became an option for the 4.7-metre long model in conjunction with the windowed body work, manual transmission, and 2.0-litre engine. [ 16 ]
Panel vans were available with two different roof heights; standard (1940mm) and high-top (2430mm). High-tops were only manufactured on the LWB chassis, although campervan conversions often have pop-top or (usually fibreglass) high-tops added to both SWB and LWB chassis.
Early models included 144" and 170" wheelbases in low and high roof configurations, 5 body styles (Passenger Van, Crew Van (mixed 2-row passenger and cargo application), and Cargo Van (both 8,550 and 11,030 GVWRs)), 1 engine choice (3.0 L V6 BlueTEC (exclusive 4x4 powertrain)).
