At the time Wilm was developing an aluminium alloy to replace brass in ammunition. The patent on Duralumin was ignored and breached by many firms, and he struggled without success to protect his rights under it. In 1919, Wilm retired from research and became a farmer. [1] [2] In older systems of terminology, 2XXX series alloys were known as duralumin, and this alloy was named 24ST. 2024 is commonly extruded, and also available in alclad sheet and plate forms. It is not commonly forged (the related 2014 aluminium alloy is, though). [3]
The hull was composed of a combination of alclad-protected duralumin and thus was relatively resistant to corrosion. The superleggera system was primarily based on the use of 'Duralumin', [citation needed] a material that originated in the Zeppelin industry prior to World War I. The company was located just north of Milan, near Alfa Romeo, Italian Citroën, and the former Isotta Fraschini plant. The first superleggera bodyworks were made for these companies.
