The school is located in an area of 4.9 ha (12 acres) where the primary school and the upper school are located. It is equipped with facilities such as science and computer laboratories, classrooms, etc. This includes the 'La Salle Auditorium' which is one of the biggest auditoria in the area. Sport plays a major part in the school's activities.
The school was named Kurunegala Buddhist Institution. By 1908, the number of students had risen to one hundred, still under the leadership of Maha-Vidane Semenaries. In 1909, the school was moved to a new premises at a Buddhist Temple, Ethkanda Viharaya, along the Kandy – Kurunegala main road.
The objective in the establishment of the school was to provide more opportunities for youth from rural communities, away from overcrowded and competitive popular schools.
