The Te Ahu a Turanga – Manawatū Tararua Highway is a 11-kilometre-long (7-mile), four-lane highway under construction connecting Ashhurst and Woodville over the Ruahine Range following the closure of the Manawatū Gorge road in 2017. Construction began in January 2021 and completion is scheduled for mid 2025.

The highway through the Manawatū Gorge between Ashhurst and Woodville in the Manawatū-Whanganui region was closed in April 2017 due to a large slip, with SH 3 traffic diverted via Saddle Road. Contractors were pulled out of clearing the slip in July 2017 due to ongoing geological movement in the hill, closing the road indefinitely. [ 28 ]
This road is heavily trafficked in the event of the closure of the Manawatū Gorge due to slips. State Highway 57 between Aokautere and Ashhurst is then used to take traffic from State Highway 3 to the Pahiatua Track. From Aokautere, the highway proceeds straight on the southern banks of the Manawatu River to the western end of the Manawatū Gorge.
