Putting pressure or warmth on the tooth may induce extreme pain. The area may be sensitive to touch and possibly swollen as well. This swelling may be present at either the base of the tooth, the gum, and/or the cheek, and sometimes can be reduced by applying ice packs. An acute abscess may be painless but still have a swelling present on the gum.
Removal of the necrotic pulp and the inflamed tissue as well as proper sealing of the canals and an appropriately fitting crown will allow the tooth to heal under uninfected conditions. [2] Surgical options for previously treated teeth that would not benefit from root canal therapy include cystectomy [12] and cystostomy. [12]
The tooth may be mobile, and the lesion may contribute to destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. [4] The pain is deep and throbbing. The oral mucosa covering an early periodontal abscess appears erythematous (red), swollen and painful to touch. [3] The surface may be shiny due to stretching of the mucosa over the abscess.
If a tooth is avulsed, make sure it is a permanent tooth (primary teeth should not be replanted, and instead the injury site should be cleaned to allow the adult tooth to begin to erupt). Other causes can include occlusal trauma due to 'high spots' after restoration work, extrusion from the tooth of root filling material, or bacterial ...
This has led to the popular belief that necrotizing gingivitis is contagious, but this is not the case. The main features of necrotizing gingivitis are painful, bleeding gums and ulceration and necrosis of the interdental papilla. There may also be intra-oral halitosis, cervical lymphadenitis (swollen lymph nodes in the neck) and malaise.
This epulis contains giant cells and is usually found on the gum margin between teeth which are anterior to the permanent molars. [13]: 317 The development of a giant cell epulis may be related to the recent loss of baby teeth, extraction or trauma. [13]: 319 The swelling is round, soft and commonly maroon or purplish in colour.
