These trainees receive basic combat training at different installations including Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; or Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. [1] Basic training is designed to be highly intense and challenging.

In July 1970 during a lull in the NCOC, the Army conducted a pilot program called the 'Basic NCO Course', taught at Ft Sill, Oklahoma. The first Army-wide basic courses began May 1971 and in January 1972 the first two advance courses were taught.
