A dual overhead cam, double overhead cam, or twin-cam engine has two camshafts over each bank of the cylinder head, [1] [2] one for the intake valves and another for the exhaust valves. Therefore there are two camshafts for a straight engine and a total of four camshafts for a V engine or a flat engine.

The valvetrain layout is defined according to the number of camshafts per cylinder bank. Therefore, a V6 engine with a total of four camshafts - two camshafts per cylinder bank - is usually referred to as a double overhead camshaft engine (although colloquially they are sometimes referred to as "quad-cam" engines). The Northstar engine is a family of high-performance 90° V engines produced by General Motors between 1993 and 2011. Regarded as GM's most technically complex engine, the original double overhead cam, four valve per cylinder, aluminum block/aluminum head V8 design was developed by Oldsmobile R&D, [citation needed] but is most associated with Cadillac's Northstar series.
The Fiat Twin Cam (also known as the Lampredi Twin Cam) is an advanced double overhead camshaft inline-four automobile engine produced from 1966 through 2000 as a Fiat/Lancia engine. The Ford I4 DOHC engine is a cast iron block 4-cylinder inline internal combustion engine with twin overhead camshafts, produced by the Ford Motor Company at Dagenham Engine Plant. It was initially available as a 2.0-litre 8-valve version, and later in 2.0 and 2.3-litre 16-valve versions from 1989 to the end of production of the MK2 Ford Galaxy ...
The first picture is a double overhead camshaft cylinder head. Those are hydraulic tappets, in place of the more common shim and bucket. Those are in fact cam lobes. An engine with over head cams and a rocker shaft does not have tappets on the valve springs. An overhead cam can have almost as many parts. The minimum missing is pushrods.
The Mercedes-Benz OM604 is a 2.0 litres (1,997 cc) and 2.2 litres (2,155 cc) inline-four cylinder (R4/I4) double overhead camshaft (DOHC) diesel engine with indirect injection manufactured by Mercedes-Benz between 1993 and 1998. [1] It replaced the single overhead camshaft (SOHC) OM601 engine.
