Stephen Matias Kovacs (January 4, 1972 – January 15, 2022) was an American saber fencer and fencing coach. [4] [5] [6] He was a three-time NCAA All American for Columbia University, four-time All-Ivy League, and the first fencer to win four consecutive Intercollegiate Fencing Association championships.
Collegiate fencing in the United States can be traced back to as early as 1941. Most major conferences do not sponsor fencing, with the notable exceptions of the Ivy League, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs (USACFC) was established in 2003 [1] to educate and promote collegiate fencing throughout the United States. The organization has over 45 teams, [2] about one-third of the schools [3] with non-varsity college club fencing in the U.S. USACFC became a nonprofit corporation in 2005.
