Marks come in two varieties, abbreviations and abstract symbols. These are usually handwritten on the paper containing the text. Symbols are interleaved in the text, while abbreviations may be placed in a margin with an arrow pointing to the problematic text.
Using all-lowercase letters may likewise be acceptable if it is done universally by sources, such as with the webcomic xkcd. (See also WP:Manual of Style/Capital letters § Acronyms .) Do not use the ™ and ® symbols, or similar, in either article text or citations, unless unavoidably necessary for context.
