Pahrump Valley is a Mojave Desert valley west of Las Vegas and the Spring Mountains massif in southern Nye County, Nevada, and eastern San Bernardino County, California. Pahrump, Nevada, is in the valley's center and the Tecopa and Chicago Valleys are immediately to the west. The valley has routes to Death Valley and a route to Las Vegas.
According to the United States Census Bureau the county's Census Tract 9805, with a land area of 4,225.415 square miles (10,943.77 km 2), comprising the Nevada Test Site and Nye County's portion of the Nevada Test and Training Range, is the country's largest census tract that has no resident population (as of the 2000 census).
State Route 372 begins at the California state line along California State Route 178, about 18 miles (29 km) northwest of the town of Shoshone near the eastern border of Death Valley National Park. From the state line, the route heads northwest where rural areas surrounding Pahrump come into view after a short distance.
The community is named after the Amargosa River which flows through the valley from its origination in Nevada to its terminus in Death Valley, California.Like most desert rivers, the 200-mile (320 km) long Amargosa flows on the surface only when rare rainfalls flood the desert washes, except for a 20-mile (32 km) segment near Shoshone, California, where the river flows perennially.
