A long, thin red area may be seen as the inflammation follows a superficial vein. This area may feel hard, warm, and tender. The skin around the vein may be itchy and swollen. The superficial system is not adequate to handle the large volume of blood being delivered to the leg via the arterial system. The result is edema, pain and a white appearance (alba) of the leg. The next step in the disease progression is occlusion of the superficial venous system, thereby preventing all venous outflow from the extremity.
Thrombophlebitis is phlebitis (vein inflammation) related to a thrombus (blood clot). These conditions are usually of the superficial veins and are generally mild and uncomplicated as opposed to deep vein thromboses , which can be life-threatening.
