White Antelope (Cheyenne: Wōkaī hwō'kō mǎs; [1] [a] c. 1789 – November 29, 1864) was a chief of the Southern Cheyenne. He was known for his advocacy of peace between white Americans living in the Great Plains until his killing at the Sand Creek massacre .

The two central institutions of traditional Cheyenne tribal governance are the Council of Forty-Four [2] and the military societies, the Dog Soldiers.The Council of Forty-Four is the council of chiefs, comprising four chiefs from each of the ten Cheyenne bands, plus four principal [3] or "Old Man" chiefs, known to have had previously served with distinction on the council.
