Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state.
The U.S. state of Rhode Island has 70 state highways, coordinated and signed by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). The Arkansas Highway System is made up of all the highways designated as Interstates, U.S. Highways and State Highways in the US state of Arkansas.The system is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT), known as the Arkansas State Highway Department (AHD) until 1977 and the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) from 1977 to 2017.

The highway was created by the Arkansas State Highway Commission on May 23, 1973 during a period of highway system expansion following the Arkansas General Assembly passing Act 9 of 1973. [3] The act directed county judges and legislators to designate up to 12 miles (19 km) of county roads as state highways in each county. [9]
The dam was completed in July 1951, with a highway atop the dam to allow highway access for the parts of northeastern Marion County separated from the county seat of Yellville by the new reservoir. Though Highway 178 doesn't appear on the March 1953 state highway map, [ 1 ] a later 1953 map shows the Highway 178 designation.
Arkansas suffixed shields are mostly the same as their parent highways, with merely the addition of a letter, such as "A" for an alternate route or "T" for a truck route. The major change comes from two-digit routes being printed on 24-by-36-inch (61 cm × 91 cm) while the parent routes are on the square 24-by-24-inch (61 cm × 61 cm) shields.
