Throughout his early years as an artist, Jones served on the staff of the University of Texas at Austin as a supervisor to the Texas Union of Arts and Crafts. [4] During this time he discovered the great painters of light, in particular, Childe Hassam, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and J.M.W. Turner; he also became interested in the works of Luigi Loir, Jean-Bernart Duvivier and Edouard Cortès.
He was the brother of Eleanor Onderdonk, also a prominent Texas painter, sculptor, and art administrator. [1] His grandfather Henry Onderdonk was the Headmaster of Saint James School in Maryland, from which Julian's father Robert graduated. [2] He was raised in South Texas and was an enthusiastic sketcher and painter.
He joined the United States Air Force and later graduated from Texas Christian University. [2] Warren worked on a ranch in Baylor County, Texas, where he became a painter of the American West, especially cowboys. [2] From 1968 to 1995, he was a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, from which he won a gold medal. [3]
