It is a branch of the Fauquier County government which administers public schools in Fauquier County. FCPS enrolls approximately 11,287 students in 20 schools (11 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 alternative learning school). Founded in 1977, the school has grown to provide education to children from preschool to the 12th grade. The school accepts children primarily from Fauquier county, but also from other nearby counties.(1) The school provides education for approximately 300 children and maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of close to 14.

NB: James City County and the City of Williamsburg operate a joint school system. All of the district's high schools have "Williamsburg" postal addresses, but are located in the County. Jamestown High School, Williamsburg; Lafayette High School, Williamsburg; Warhill High School, Williamsburg (opened in 2007)
