Oshtemo Charter Township is a charter township of Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The 2020 census recorded a population of 23,747, [ 3 ] up from 21,705 at the 2010 census . [ 4 ] The township was organized in 1839.
Kalamazoo Township and the Westwood neighborhood lie to the north, and Oshtemo Township is to the west. There are approximately four hundred single-family residences in the neighborhood, which are the primary focus of the Arcadia Neighborhood Association. The northern area of the neighborhood contains natural, undeveloped areas.
The area was primarily agricultural, and population grew slowly. By 1870, there were about 2000 people in the township, a figure which was not substantially increased until after World War II. In 1877, the township purchased a half-acre of land near the geographic center, and constructed this town hall to house its governmental operations.
The family was the first Euro-American pioneers to settle in Oshtemo Township. The family constructed a log cabin near where the present house stands and began farming. More settlers joined them, and in 1833 the constructed the area's first school on the Drake property. By 1839, there were nearly 70 new residents in the township.
It runs eastward through Oshtemo Township and turns north at U.S. 131. M-89 enters the county near the midpoint of the northern county line. It runs southeasterly to and intersection with M-43 north of Richland and then runs eastward from Richland, exiting the county 3.4 miles (5.5 km) south of the northeastern county corner.
