Naked Mountain Natural Area Preserve is a 356-acre (1.44 km 2) Natural Area Preserve located in Nelson County, Virginia.The preserve was dedicated in 2006. [2]It was created to protect an uncommon growth of shooting-stars (Dodecatheon meadia) and a small population of the globally rare Torrey's mountain mint (Pycnanthemum torreyi), which occupy rocky clearings on otherwise forested slopes.
The refuge is located near Grand Bay, Alabama in Mobile County, Alabama and Jackson County, Mississippi, and when complete will encompass over 32,000 acres (130 km 2). The refuge is part of the National Wildlife Refuge system.
Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a 1,038 acres (4.20 km 2) nature preserve located in the eastern portion of Jefferson County, Alabama, in the City of Birmingham's historic South East Lake neighborhood. The preserve includes a visitor center containing native Alabama animals including raptors, snakes, turtles, and owls.
Most of the Fern Cave NWR is on the western side of Nat Mountain between Scottsboro and Huntsville, Alabama. The Paint Rock River, a tributary of the Tennessee River borders the northwestern side of the refuge. Elevation ranges from the relative flat area around the Paint Rock River valley to a 1,500+ foot elevation at the top of the mountain.
Dugger Mountain, the second highest peak in Alabama with an elevation of 2,140 feet (650 m), [4] is located between Anniston and Piedmont. The wilderness encompasses some of the most rugged and mountainous terrain in Alabama, as well as numerous endangered and threatened plant communities.
