Until a constitutional referendum in July 2005, only one political organization, the Movement (also called the National Resistance Movement) was allowed to operate in Uganda. The president, who also chairs the Movement, maintained that the Movement was not a political party , but a mass organization that claimed the loyalty of all Ugandans.
However, elections were not held in all parts of the country, with the Parliament of Buganda nominating 21 members (all of whom belonged to the Kabaka Yekka party) to the national parliament instead. The result was a victory for the Uganda People's Congress, which won 37 of the 82 seats, [1] and went on to form an alliance with Kabaka Yekka.
In 1962 Kabaka Yekka allied with Uganda People's Congress. In the Lukiko elections of 22 February 1962, it won 65 of the 68 seats, with a vote share of more than 90%. [ 7 ] The Lukiko duly elected 21 KY members to the National Assembly.
