It is the 7th oldest church house in South Africa. It was constructed by a supervisor and a number of skilled slaves who continued to work as 'apprentices' after the emancipation of slaves in 1834. In 1841, the Roman Catholic Church appointed its first priest in George; 1843 saw the completion of their church building.
