Bates College (/ b eɪ t s /) [6] is a private liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine, United States. Anchored by the Historic Quad , the campus of Bates totals 813 acres (329 ha). It maintains 600 acres (240 ha) of nature preserve known as the " Bates-Morse Mountain " near Campbell Island and a coastal center on Atkins Bay .
The state's three oldest institutions of higher education are Bowdoin College (founded in 1794), Colby College (1813), and Bates College (1855). The three colleges collectively form the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium and are ranked among the best colleges in the United States; often placing in the top 10 percent of all liberal arts colleges .
The state with the highest percentage of people having a bachelor's degree or higher educational attainment was Massachusetts at 50.6%, and the lowest was West Virginia at 24.1%. The District of Columbia had a percentage significantly higher than that of any U.S. state at 63.0%. [1]
Among the Little Ivies are the "Little Three", a term used by Amherst College, Wesleyan University and Williams College, and "Maine Big Three", a term used by Bates College, Bowdoin College, and Colby College.
