Practical shooting, also known as dynamic shooting or action shooting, is a set of shooting sports in which the competitors try to unite the three principles of precision, power, and speed, by using a firearm of a certain minimum power factor to score as many points as possible during the shortest time (or sometimes within a set maximum time).
IPSC's activities include international regulation of the sport by approving firearms and equipment for various divisions, administering competition rules, and educating range officials (referees) through the International Range Officers Association who are responsible for conducting matches safely, fairly, and according to the rules.

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) was founded in May 1976 at the Columbia Conference in Missouri, USA, and the Norwegian Association for Practical Shooting (Norges Forbund for Praktisk Skyting, NFPS) was formally established in 1979 as IPSC Norway.
