Charpai (also, Charpaya, Charpoy, Khat, Khatla, Manja, or Manji) [1] is a traditional woven bed used across South Asia. The name charpai is a compound of char "four" and pay "footed".
The stitching on the cloth gives it a slightly wrinkled, wavy effect. Contemporary kantha is applied to a wider range of garments such as sarees, dupatta, shirts for men and women, bedding and other furnishing fabrics, mostly using cotton and silk. Modern Kantha-stitch craft industry involves a very complex multi-staged production model. [6]

The motifs are designed by the women sewing the quilt, usually of their choice. The embroidery is done as a fine running stitch with the thread of the same colour as the background cloth.
