The intermediate courts were reformed in 1973 by the District Court Act 1973, [1] which abolished the courts of quarter sessions and each of the district courts and amalgamated their jurisdictions into a single District Court of New South Wales, with a statewide criminal and civil jurisdiction.
From 1858 each district court judge had a concurrent appointment as chairman of the courts of quarter sessions for the district to which they were appointed. [4] In 1973 the separate district courts and courts of quarter sessions were replaced by a single District Court which exercised both criminal and civil jurisdiction throughout the state. [5]
