Bradley Automotive was an American automotive company that built and sold kits and components for kit cars as well as completed vehicles. They were based in Plymouth, Minnesota . The company began selling kits in 1970 and ceased operations in 1981.
A fiberglass body kit for a Standard Volkswagen Beetle chassis using a VW or Porsche Type 4 engine. Many used Hot Rod VW engines such as the 1679, 1835, 1915, 2076 and 2332cc displacement engines with twin carburetors for 'mild' to 'wild' performance increases. A few also utilized the Porsche 356 and Porsche 912 engines.
Two versions were built: the GT-12, which was based on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis and used the VW's suspension, engine and transaxle, and the GT-15, which had a custom-built chassis that used a Corvair front subframe and suspension as well as the Corvair's rear suspension, engine and transaxle. Thousands of Avengers were sold in the 1970s. [26]
The donor car's original 4-speed transaxle and four cylinder Volkswagen air-cooled engine could be kept, but other options, including Porsche or Corvair engines, could be substituted. At roughly 1,500 lb (680.4 kg), the GT-12 weighed approximately 500 lb (226.8 kg) less than a standard Beetle.
The Brubaker Box was assembled on a complete Volkswagen Type 1 chassis. Due to the extended length of the body compared to that of a standard Volkswagen Beetle, the foot pedal assembly was relocated forward and up from the standard position. The fuel tank was moved from the front to the center of the vehicle for increased safety. [citation needed]
The kit was completed and sent to Launceston, Tasmania in November 1991. Before the law requiring a mandatory crash test in 1970 there was a booming kit car industry in Sweden with most companies basing their kits on the VW Beetle chassis. By the time amateur-built vehicles were once again allowed in 1982, all kit car makers in Sweden were out of business.
