The Intolerable Acts, sometimes referred to as the Insufferable Acts or Coercive Acts, were a series of five punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea Party. The laws aimed to punish Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest of the Tea Act , a tax measure enacted by Parliament in May 1773.
The first of the Townshend Acts, sometimes simply known as the Townshend Act, was the Revenue Act 1767 (7 Geo 3 c 46). [ d ] [ 43 ] [ 44 ] This act represented the Chatham ministry 's new approach to generating tax revenue in the American colonies after the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766.

In 1767, Parliament passed the Townshend Acts which added different types of taxes which were used to fund colonial governors and judges. [2] Many colonists in the Americas, however, developed a different conception of their role within the British Empire.
