Ash, his mother Delia, Mr. Mime, and Professor Oak travel to Vermilion City to attend the opening of Professor Cerise's new research lab. Cerise wants new trainer Goh to choose his first Pokémon from among the Kanto starters, but he refuses because he wants to choose Mew instead.
The competition requires all participants to catch an Alolan Geodude, a Bruxish, and a Passimian. The race is interrupted by Team Rocket, who are there to steal Ash's Pikachu. However, the All-out Brothers foil their plans by having their Kommo-o use its newly perfected Z-move, and eventually rescuing the Pokémon that were captured.
Following Ash’s victory at the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart, Nanu agrees to battle him in a grand trial! But there’s a catch—Ash must defeat three of Nanu’s Pokémon using only one of his. He chooses Lycanroc, whose training has paid off, as it quickly defeats Nanu’s Krookodile. Next up is Sableye, and Lycanroc lands another win.
