It's the Ruger M77 Hawkeye (blued steel, walnut stock, engraved floorplate) in .257 Roberts and this is one nice rifle! Apparently, this rifle was/is part ...
On varmints, I have had my best luck (for accuracy) with the 75 gr. Hornady and IMR or H-4350, for 'around' 3500 fps. My best friend is a big fan of the Ackley Improved .257, and so far, a 24" barreled standard Roberts matches (and in a couple of cases, was 100 fps faster) than his AI rifles with equal length barrels.

He killed thousands of elephants and many lions with the round and died of old age. Sorry for the old thread, but I believe you mean Karamojo Bell (W.D.M. Bell). He did not use the .257 Roberts, but rather the 6.5x54, which is a .256 caliber. He used this in a Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifle for his famous ivory hunting. Dan.

7mm-08' max cartridge length is 2.800" whereas a 7x57 Mauser is 3.065". This means a 7mm-08 will fit in the magazine with a quarter inch spacer in front. BTW, the parent case for a 257 Roberts is a 7x57 Mauser case. Don't know why but the OAL for a 257 Rob is just 2.780" .... considerably shorter than a 7x57.
I found a Ruger Hawkeye in .257 Roberts the first week in October last year, but didn't have time to get it ready before leaving for my annual Texas hunt. She was well set up and ready this year! My bullet of choice was the Speer 120 gr. Grans Slam over a charge of IMR 4350 and the load preformed very well. My "Annual Texas Whitetail Safari ...

I love that thing and it shoots a 3/4 inch group at 100 yds with 3 different loads. I was lucky on that draw.
I'll take Huntsman22's .260 Rem. on any day with my .257 Roberts ,a pre- war model 70 re barreled by Montana rifle. I load H100V powder behind 117 - 120 gr bullets and approach Weatherby velocities leaving a relatively anemic .260 in it's wake. Granted the .260 has heavier bullets to choose from. All meant in fun!

I wasn't able to work up a load for it the 1st year (I was still working then - this was before the China virus bit us). After working up a load, I did deer hunt with it in 2020, but didn't hunt in 2021.
