I have a 3" pipe spool with a carbon steel WN RF CL150 flange (ASTM A105) and it needs to be bolted to a mating CL150 flange made of stainless steel (ASTM A182). Are there any practices that I should be aware of, to prevent galvanic corrosion, when bolting the two dissimilar flanges together...
The standard tables are typically for "alloy steel" and "carbon steel" studs and machine bolts. Most projects are able to use just A36/A307 material (carbon steel)and A193 B7 (alloy steel) for almost all applications. The tables are based upon work published by Crane in a valve catalog in the mid 1960s.
Thanks for the response. However, I need clarification viz. the pipe flanges are standard ANSI B16.5 sus flanges and the operating temperatures are low circa zero deg. C. I would have thought that the stainless steel bolts and nuts should be able to take the required stresses for proper gasket seating and sealing under operation.
Another interesting phenomenon is the increasing use of stainless steel fasteners for flanges, etc. in these buried pipe systems. Some corrosion enineers have suggested that due to the geometry, stresses and the way that they fit together, stainless steel fasters are especially prone to corrosion.
We have an application where we have a stainless steel tank with a flanged outlet (also stainless steel). We are looking to connect a carbon steel valve (flange) to the outlet. I'm wondering if there are any (code/standards) rules prohibiting or advising against connecting stainless steel flanges to carbon steel flanges.
Dec 11, 2003. 348. US. If your still wanting to use flanges, weld a 150# S.S. flange to the stainless and use a “Flange Adapter”” on the D.I. pipe. The adapter slides over the plain end of the D.I. and secures with set screws and seals with an O-Ring. The 125# adapter will mate with the 150# S.S. flange.
