Whickham is a village in Tyne and Wear, North East England, [1] within the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. The village is on high ground overlooking the River Tyne and 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Newcastle upon Tyne .
Wickham is a misspelling of Whickham, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England. It was proclaimed a Municipality in the NSW Government Gazette, 27 February 1871, [ 3 ] largely by the efforts of James Hannell , who became Wickham's first mayor.

Wickham was established in 1970 by Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates (Robe) and named after John Clements Wickham, the captain of HMS Beagle, who surveyed the north-west coast in 1840.
Gateshead Central and Whickham is a constituency in Tyne and Wear represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Mark Ferguson of the Labour Party. The constituency was created by the 2023 periodic review of Westminster constituencies , and was first contested at the 2024 general election .
The Gateshead Central and Whickham constituency is the only one wholly in Gateshead. Its MP, first elected in 2024, is Mark Ferguson ( Labour ). The Blaydon and Consett constituency covers the west of the borough and Birtley to the south, and has been represented since 2017 by Liz Twist , also for Labour.

Whickham South and Sunniside is a local council ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. This ward covers an area of around 5.6 square miles (14.5 km 2), [5] and has a population of 8,313. [6] As of September 2020, the ward is served by three councillors: John McClury, Jonathan Charles Wallace and Marilynn Ord. [7]
