Autonegotiation can be used by devices that are capable of more than one transmission rate, different duplex modes (half duplex and full duplex), and different transmission standards at the same speed (though in practice only one standard at each speed is widely supported).
In normal half-duplex operations late collisions do not occur. However, in a duplex mismatch the collisions seen on the half-duplex side of the link are often late collisions. The full-duplex side usually will register frame check sequence errors, or runt frames. [7] [8] Viewing these standard Ethernet statistics can help diagnose the problem.
Duplex mismatch may be inadvertently caused when an administrator configures an interface to a fixed mode (e.g. 100 Mbit/s full-duplex) and fails to configure the remote interface, leaving it set to autonegotiate. Then, when the auto-negotiation process fails, half-duplex is assumed by the autonegotiating side of the link.
